A cold house stops being an inconvenience and starts being a problem quickly — most of all if there are children or older folks in it, or pipes running through an unheated crawlspace. It is also the failure most likely to happen at the worst hour, because systems tend to quit under load on the coldest night of the year.
What to check yourself first
Worth five minutes before you call anybody. Sometimes it's the whole problem, and when it isn't, you've told us something useful.
- Confirm the thermostat is on HEAT and set above room temperature.
- On gas: check that the gas valve is open and the unit has power.
- Check the filter — furnaces will shut themselves down on overheat if airflow is choked.
No heat is a 24/7 call here. If it tries to light and quits, or cycles on and off fast, phone rather than keep resetting it.
